Orleans County Information

Orleans County, NY was created in 1824 from Genesee County I is on Lake Ontario, between Monroe and Niagara counties, and north of Genesee County. Orleans owes its early settlement to the fact that the old "Ridge Road" passed through the center of the region. The 1809 road from Batavia to Buffalo also passed along this section of the "Genesee Road." Settlement of the area progressed quickly between 1809 and 1812. Settlement picked up again in the early 1820s when the Erie Canal came to "Newport" (today's Albion). The first regularly published newspaper in the region was the Newport Patriot which was edited and published by B. Franklin Cowdery.
